Bats Series Part 1: Synopsis and Biology Tri-State Wildlife Management continues to receive many calls from people in the Tri-State area who are realizing bats are taking up residence in their home or business. This is the time of year when the technicians at TSWM begin the preliminary bat exclusion process so when final exclusion is permitted, the job is completed more quickly and easily.

Due to the large number of bat encounters this time of year, Tri-State Wildlife Management will be posting a blog series devoted solely to educating the public about bats. The first part in this series gives a brief synopsis as well as bat biology information.

Bat Synopsis Bats may be the most misunderstood animals in the United States despite their ecological value. Regardless of their usefulness as the primary predators of night flying insects such as mosquitoes, bats suffer from a bad public image throughout much of the world. Centuries of myths, superstitions and misconceptions lead to fears of dread associated with such characters as Count Dracula and lead to bats being killed simply because they live near people that fear them. Despite their reputation, bats are not aggressive and usually wish to avoid humans. Bat populations the world over are rapidly declining leading to strict implementation of conservation efforts to protect bats and their habitats.

Biology Bats are mammals, having hair, giving birth to living young, and feeding them on milk from mammary glands. They are the only mammals that truly fly and are often seen fluttering around dusk, using their amazingly developed echolocation system (or sonar) to navigate through the night sky and locate and capture insects. More than two-thirds of bat species hunt insects in this way. It is said that a single little brown bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in one hour, while a pregnant or lactating female has a large enough appetite to eat the equivalent of her entire body weight in a single night.

There are over 900 species of bats around the world with the majority of them residing in the tropics. Bats are second only to rodents in numbers among mammals and comprise almost one-fourth of all mammal species. The Cincinnati Tri-State is home to only a fraction of these bats, with the most common being the little brown bat and the big brown bat.

Summertime brings with it many pleasant experiences –vacations, grill outs, swimming, boating, mosquitoes, bats –er wait…come again? Okay, so although summer has its benefits, we also must recognize its drawbacks. Oftentimes summer evenings are plagued by unwanted guests –mosquitoes. You might also sight another air bound creature having its own feast –bats.

Bats are great mammals to have around, as they hunt mosquitoes and other insects at dusk, just when insects’ presence are at their climax. Tri-State Wildlife Management has experienced a sharp increase in mole calls this spring compared to years past. Many customers are saying that they have had sporadic mole activity in previous years, but this year the moles are wreaking havoc in their yards!  The common expression,”Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill” implies that mole hills (and moles) aren’t a problem to take seriously. The Eastern Mole is found in much of the United States. Although there are seven know species of moles in the US, we in the Greater Cincinnati Area are familiar with the Eastern Mole. Moles can live up to seven years; however, most live three years. Moles have a blunt, stocky body and large feet and claws for digging. Their fur is velvet-like and will smooth in either direction for turning in tunnels.

Moles tunnel up to eighteen feet per hour and move forward and backward eighty feet per minute in the tunnel. They have small eyes and very poor eyesight. The mole’s sense of smell is very good and they use their long nose to search for food.  Moles are opportunistic feeders and consume almost any insect they find. Earthworms are the main component of their diet; however, insects including grubs, ants and ant larva make up their diet as well. Moles have two types of tunnels -surface tunnels and deep tunnels. The deep tunnels are used during winter when it’s cold and in the summer when it’s hot. They also make mole mounds which are very visible. Moles like their living quarters to be on higher ground.

Resident Canada geese are difficult to remove. By definition, Canada geese are not classified as pest birds and are afforded protection by federal & state agencies. Nonetheless, Canada geese are increasingly becoming the scourge of suburbia as their numbers have grown in the past decade from only a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of these birds. In fact, the familiar V shaped squadron of honking geese heading south is becoming a rare sight. Country clubs, business parks and community living environments offer pristine, manicured lawns and ponds providing an ideal habitat that effectively modifies their migration cycle. Kenton County, KY Wildlife Control

Kenton County, KY Wildlife Control: On Tuesday of this week, the technicians at Tri-State Wildlife Management took advantage of the break from the torrential rain to go on calls, especially in Kenton County, KY. They had a few repairs and animal pick ups, and they also needed to check a few traps and indicators. It just so happened that the vast majority of their calls took place in Kenton County, KY.

First on the agenda was a job in Edgewood, KY to check raccoon and squirrel traps. Andrew then went to a home in Villa Hills, KY and pulled 3 brand new juvenile raccoons out of an attic. He then had a short drive over to Ft. Wright, KY to pick up a squirrel in a trap and make some preliminary repairs to the ridge vents of the home. Again, Andrew went on another short drive to Park Hills, KY to check an indicator. In this instance, the technician was not able to previously determine what type of animal was entering the home, so an indicator was used that will leave behind sign of the nuisance animal. Based on the fur and maybe other markings left on the indicator, Andrew will now be able to determine whether the animal getting into the attic was a raccoon or squirrel. Next up on the schedule, Andrew went to a Crescent Springs, KY home to remove squirrel traps and start a repair. The last Kenton County, KY job for Tri-State Wildlife Management was simply to check some raccoon traps at a residence in Ryland Heights, KY.

Dead Animal Removal Taylor Mill, KY

Spring is here, and we’ve finally had some warm days. Tuesday of this week was especially sunny and warm in the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area, including Taylor Mill, KY. On the other hand, yesterday and today have exhibited the rainy side of spring with torrential downpours and thunderstorms. Despite the less-than-stellar weather, yesterday was a full day of inspections, checking traps and indicators, and a dead animal removal call.

Dead Animal Removal Taylor Mill, KY Andrew and Andy (A & A), Tri-State Wildlife Management‘s technicians, went to Taylor Mill, KY for the dead animal removal call. Andy’s a fairly new technician and has never gone on a dead animal removal call, so Andrew took this opportunity to train him. The suspected dead animal was under an office trailer. First, A & A went into the office to see if they could somewhat locate the smell, but to no avail. Not being able to smell anything from inside meant they couldn’t pinpoint where under the office trailer they should start their search. Suited up in protectivee gear, A & A belly crawled under the trailer, keeping their eyes peeled for any sign of fur. There was a slight dead animal smell, but it wasn’t overwhelming…yet.

After belly crawling under the building for just a couple of minutes, Andy informed Andrew that he saw a raccoon tail. Andrew’s first question was, “Is it dead?” Although being hired for dead animal removal, you can never be too careful when dealing with wildlife. He wanted to make sure they didn’t stumble upon anything live while being in such a vulnerable situation – there are no fast get-aways when you have to belly crawl. You’re also not in the best stance to defend yourself.

Unsure of the status of the raccoon, and wanting to keep a safe distance until it was determined, A & A decided to throw a few pebbles at the lump of fur to see if it moved. It did not…they moved in.

Andy, anxious to pull his first dead animal gig, grabbed the raccoon tail, and as he did, the horrible, torturous smell of a long-been-dead-animal emitted from the raccoon. Gagging and sputtering through full face masks, A & A belly crawled back out from underneath the office trailer.

Unless just fur and bones are left, the longer an animal has been dead, the stinkier it is. Let’s just say this one was a doozy. Working in wildlife removal and control, A & A are used to their fair share of less-than-pleasant smells, but this raccoon takes the cake. Both technicians had to shower before going on their remaining calls, for their sakes, but especially for other customers’ sakes!

Canada geese can be seen in increasing numbers throughout neighborhoods and industrial areas of cities, as well as on golf courses, in parks, or anywhere else with a body of water. The Cincinnati area is no exception to have Canada geese problems. Canada geese are also becoming less migratory, oftentimes staying year round in these particular areas, taking advantage of the easy living that an urban environment affords, such as food and warm shelter. They see no need to fly south for the winter when they have all that they need where they are.

Canada geese can be problematic for a variety of reasons, including aggressive nesting behavior, and the creation of unsanitary, unsightly, and dangerous waste and debris. Canada geese, especially males (gander), become aggressive in the springtime as they protect the nest and eggs. Females also tend to be more aggressive. Anyone who walks too closely to the nest is subject to a goose attack, which is not only frightening but can also result in bodily harm. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife (2010) has issued three guidelines to follow if a Canada goose attacks you: First, stand towards the goose and keep direct eye contact; second, back away from the goose gently and slowly if it becomes violent; and third, keep a neutral demeanor – do not act scared or violent. Canada goose droppings are also a major cause of concern in neighborhoods, industrial parks, golf courses, other places in and around Cincinnati. It becomes difficult to walk around piles of waste, and it is a huge hassle to try and keep an area clean if a Canada goose population is present.

Bats in Attic  Edgewood, KY: Warmer nights like we saw this weekend mean Tri-State Wildlife Management (TSWM) has had a spike in bat calls from new customers. That’s because bats have been holed up over the cold winter months and want to take advantage of any nights that are a break from the cold. TSWM has received calls about bats in attics in Edgewood, KY, Cold Spring, KY and Anderson Township, OH, just to name a few places. Tri-State Wildlife Management is an expert company for bat control. It’s always important to do a thorough outside inspection to figure out where bats are getting in and where they could get in in the future. Goose Droppings Everywhere!

With spring approaching we will be getting the poop calls. Poop being, GOOSE DROPPINGS EVERYWHERE! Many public areas such as country clubs, golf courses, businesses, parks, and community living environments offer pristinely manicured lawns and ponds that provide an ideal habitat for geese. These areas are also where people often want to hang out when the weather is warm and sunny. You may want to have a picnic or play ball with your children but you certainly don’t want to eat in an area covered with poop or have your children playing in it.

When goose droppings are concentrated, they are unpleasant and a potential health risk. If high goose numbers persist in small areas, they have been found to harbor elevated levels of organisms that cause diseases in humans, Rotaviruses, Salmonella, D Listeria viruses have all been found in concentrations of Canada goose feces. They have also been known to elevate bacteria levels via fecal coli form.

Canada geese are the leading nuisance bird for lakes, parks, golf courses, businesses and homes in close proximity to water. Their acidic droppings corrode many substrates including tar-based roofing materials. Droppings that are allowed to accumulate on roofs damage the material and eventually cause leaks. The life expectancy of a warehouse roof can be cut in half by just a light but continuous application of droppings. Several warehouses every year experience damage and leakage problems from residing geese. In extreme cases roofs have been known to collapse from standing water when drainage systems are blocked by droppings and feathers, thus causing the temporary closure of some large buildings.
