Pigeon Damage and Damage Identification

Pigeons can be found in large flocks around sizable buildings, farms, cliffs and bridges. Pigeons are easily identifiable birds due to their messy habits. They leave their droppings everywhere they go, particularly their roost sites. Pigeon droppings contain uric acid that makes it extremely corrosive. The droppings are the direct cause of millions of dollars’ worth of damage to buildings and other property. A tragic example of the corrosive nature of pigeon droppings is a 2007 Minnesota bridge accident, which was found to be a direct result of droppings drastically corroding the metal supports until they were sufficiently weakened.

Pigeon Damage Control Methods

Once a building becomes home to pigeons, they are there for life. Trapping and relocation may seem like a good idea, but when you attempt to relocate them, they will fly right back. Being a direct descendant of the homing pigeon, they have an excellent sense of direction and can find their way to their original location from many miles away.

Keeping pigeons off buildings often depends on choosing the correct plan for the situation. The success of a pigeon control program depends on how determined the birds are to occupy the former territory, and how determined we are to keep them out.

General Biology of Pigeons

Pigeons are not a native species to America, but are found in large numbers across the country. They live for 3-4 years in the wild and can breed year round. They are monogamous but both sexes may occasionally mate with other pigeons. A nesting pair will typically have 3-4 broods a year. Most of their nests contain 1-2 eggs, and they take approximately 18 days to hatch. Their young leave the nest around 10 days after hatching.

Pigeons are not migratory, and prefer to live and breed near their birth site. The daily routine of a pigeon is to feed during the morning, rest during the afternoon, and roost at night. Both parents feed the young, but the male does all the guarding of the nest and young.

General Information

The feral pigeon is the number one urban pest bird. Large numbers exist in every city across the country. Not a native bird, feral pigeons are descendants of domestic homing pigeons brought over from Europe and released here in the 1600s. They were domesticated from the wild rock doves from the sea cliffs of Europe by the Romans over two thousand years ago. Several traits have allowed them to dominate the urban landscape. Because of their history, pigeons are not afraid of people; they roost and nest readily in man-made structures and they have a diverse diet. The standard pigeon has a short neck with a small head. Their short legs with the level front and hind toes allow them to perch on branches as well as walk on flat surfaces.

Pigeons are monogamous and a mating pair will typically have three or four broods a year. The female will usually lay two or three eggs at a time. The eggs take roughly 18 days to hatch and 35 more days before the fledglings leave the nest.

Pigeons are not migratory. Their natural instinct is to stay near their birth site. This trait gives the pigeon a very determined personality when it comes to roosting at a particular site. The daily cycle of a pigeon is to roost at night, feed in the morning and loaf in the afternoon. The seasonal cycle is courtship in the early winter, nest building in late winter and breeding in the spring. However, in warm climates, breeding will occur year round. Pigeons molt once a year in late summer.

Feral pigeons are responsible for untold millions of dollars of damage each year in urban areas. The uric acid in their feces is highly corrosive. Also, debris from roosting flocks can build up, backing up gutters and drains thus causing damage to roofs and other structures. Extensive damage to air conditioning units and other rooftop machinery is commonplace. There are also other economic costs that can be associated from pigeons taking up residence such as slip and fall liability and projection of an unclean, dirty company image. Besides physical damage, the bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites found in pigeon droppings and nesting materials sometimes represent a health risk.

Health Hazards with Pigeons

There are many health risks associated with birds and their droppings. You do not want to turn a blind eye towards birds and underestimate the risks associated with them. The bacteria, fungi, and ectoparasites that they and their droppings harbor are numerous. Some of the diseases associated with birds are Histoplasmosis, Cryptococcus, Listeriosis, Newcastle Disease, and Salmonella. Birds also carry many ectoparasites such as ticks and mites that can infect their human hosts with such diseases as Encephalitis, Avian Pox and Meningitis. TSWM can provide you with a safe and effective abatement of disease carrying contaminants. Bird droppings and nests can be safely removed and the site disinfected to reduce the health risks to you and others that may come in contact with the contaminants.

Squirrel babies

March 5th, 2014

Do you think you have squirrels or even squirrel babies living in your attic? Call Tri-State Wildlife Management – Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s squirrel removal company! (859)635-0037 or (513)853-0037

When do squirrels have their babies? Some squirrel babies in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have already been born, and female squirrels will continue to give birth through April. Litters of squirrels range from 1 to 7 young. When conditions are favorable (as they typically are for urban squirrels) squirrels can breed multiple times a year. Female squirrels often use attics, chimneys, soffit areas, and gutter lines as nest sites and dens to raise their young. Tri-State Wildlife Management must take extra precaution when excluding squirrels out of attics and other structural voids to make sure there aren’t any juveniles trapped inside. Juveniles can begin venturing out of the nest around 6 to 7 weeks. Female squirrels wean the juveniles at 10 to 12 weeks. At this point, the juveniles are half of their adult weight.

Scratching In My Wall

February 24th, 2014

Call Tri-State Wildlife Management if you hear scratching in your wall at night! We will take care of any wildlife problem including bats! (859) 635-0037

Having warmer evenings the past few nights has really been making our phone ring. Warm evenings mean that bats are active and driving people crazy. You may be thinking, “What is scratching in my wall?” If you hear a scratching sound in your wall or ceiling on a warm night, you more than likely have bats living among you.

The other night we had several calls where customers heard scratching in their walls and ceiling. With the weather being as warm as it has been I knew it was probably bats. Some of my customers made it very clear they had bats once they told me they also heard a high pitched screeching sound coming from their walls and attic. This sound is not familiar to most people unless they have had encounters with bats previously.

On Friday night we responded to a call in Ft. Thomas, KY where a customer had a bat flying around in their house. We responded immediately and captured the bat. After talking to the customer we found out that the bat was in the same room as a sleeping baby. We explained to the customer that bats can potentially have rabies and being in the same room as the baby, they may not know if the baby had been bitten. Even though the chances of being bitten by a bat carrying rabies is slim, we always suggest that the bat be sent off for testing just to be sure.

After an exciting night of hunting down a bat we returned to the customer’s house the next morning to perform an inspection of the house for bat entry. If a bat is found in a house this time of year there are usually more bats living in the house. This customer also indicated to us that they had been hearing a scratching sound in there ceiling on warmer nights. After the inspection was complete we were able to determine where the bats were getting in and we were able to let the customer know what would need to be done to remove the bats and keep them out.

Have you been thinking, “What is scratching in my wall” or know you have bats in your house? Give Tri-State Wildlife Management a call at (859)635-0037 or visit our website at Tri-StateWildlifeManagement.com. We service the Northern Kentucky, Indiana, and Cincinnati Tri-State area.

Goose Removal Ohio Canada geese have the potential to cause bodily harm. Geese, especially males, become aggressive when they are protecting their nest. Oftentimes, Canada geese impede walkways for pedestrians if their nest is nearby. When someone attempts to pass by, a goose may attack.

Canada geese are the leading nuisance bird for lakes, parks, golf courses, businesses and homes in close proximity to water. Their acidic droppings corrode many substrates including tar-based roofing materials. Droppings that are allowed to accumulate on roofs damage the material. The life expectancy of a warehouse roof can be cut in half by just a light but continuous application of droppings. Several warehouses every year experience damage from Canada geese. In extreme cases roofs have been known to collapse from standing water when drainage systems are blocked by droppings and feathers.

When Canada goose droppings are concentrated, they are unpleasant and a potential health risk. If high Canada goose numbers persist, they have been found to harbor elevated levels of organisms that cause diseases in humans.

Skunks are very active in the month of February as their mating season begins in late January. With this increase in activity comes an increase in skunk sprays. You may have experienced this smell recently near your home or as you are traveling on the roads. Skunks tend to spray during the mating season for two reasons. First, 2 males competing for the same female will spray, and females will spray to make males aware when she is not interested.

Oftentimes, skunks are prey to road traffic, but especially during the breeding season. Regularly, a skunk has a range of one half to two miles, but during the mating season, male skunks may travel 4 to 5 miles a night. Roadkill skunks give off the skunk spray smell because their anal glands that store their musk rupture.

Increased skunk activity may also cause increase sprays towards curious pets or other animals. Sometimes home or business owners mistakenly think they have a skunk problem when a pet or other animal gets sprayed and seeks shelter near their home or business. Of course this isn’t always the case since increased skunk movement means a skunk may stumble upon an ideal den on your property. Common man-made skunk dens include the underneath of porches, porch stoops, decks, and sheds.

What should you do if a skunk has invaded your property? Call the greater Cincinnati area’s professional wildlife control company, Tri-State Wildlife Management, to help rid you of your problem. Not only will Tri-State Wildlife trap and remove unwanted skunks, but we will also exclude skunks from the den they were inhabiting. In addition, TSWM can make your property less attractive to skunks and other wildlife through habitat modification so that future wildlife problems can be prevented.

Goose Removal Cincinnati

Tri-State Wildlife Management is the best choice for professional Canada goose removal and control services in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana! 513-853-0037 or 859-635-0037

Canada Goose Removal Cincinnati Tri-State Wildlife Management specializes in Canada goose removal, harassment, and habitat modification. Canada geese, despite their name, extend far beyond Canada, and despite their migratory instincts, not all Canada geese leave their summer home for warmer weather in the colder months. Many Canada geese can be found year-round in the tri-state area due to a comfortable lifestyle acquired from being in close proximity to people. Who needs to fly south when food and warmth are readily available in one place year-round? Residential Canada geese are considered nuisance wildlife when their unpleasant behaviors affect people. First, to complement their migratory instinct, Canada geese are also equipped with a strong homing instinct, meaning they have an unbreakable urge to return to the area that they were hatched and raised. Without intervention, the goose population multiplies rapidly. A large population of geese then translates to large amounts of goose excrement, which is another common complaint against Canada geese. Lastly, Canada geese become very aggressive during nesting, especially males if they feel their nest is threatened.

Canada Goose Control

If unwanted Canada geese are invading the green space of your yard or town, you already know what a nuisance they can be. They are the leading nuisance bird for lakes, parks, golf courses, businesses and homes in close proximity to water. Aside from the overall noise and distraction, unwanted avian guests leave heaps of droppings, feathers and debris, which are unsightly and unsanitary. These droppings are often masses of diseases and can pose serious health risks. In addition to the mess Canada geese become very aggressive during the months of February through June.

Canada Goose Synopsis

Resident Canada geese are difficult to remove. By definition, Canada geese are not classified as pest birds and are afforded protection by federal and state agencies. Nonetheless, Canada geese are increasingly becoming the scourge of suburbia. Country clubs, business parks and community living environments offer pristinely manicured lawns and ponds providing an ideal habitat that effectively modifies their migration cycle. Canada geese are very opportunistic and easily exploit the new “easy living” conditions found in an urban environment. Aesthetic damage to suburban lawns, park, etc., is incalculable. Canada geese are also a health hazard – fouling green spaces, lawns, and ponds.

Breeding and Imprinting

Canada geese have a built-in mechanism that enables them to find their way back to the spot they were hatched. This imprinting creates long-term issues. Habituated geese will return year after year to nest, thus drastically increasing the goose population. Only a well-executed Integrated Management Plan (IMP) can break the cycle and eliminate your goose problem.

Legal Status

Canada geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Handling and management of Canada geese requires federal permits. The site will also need to be registered in a Nest Destruction Program. Northern Kentucky Bat Removal

For Bat Removal Services in Kentucky, Ohio, or Indiana, call Tri-State Wildlife Management!  (859) 635-0037

The news media is often guilty of sensationalizing stories about rabid bats or bat colonies in buildings and the dangers involved; however, like many native wildlife a very small percentage of bats contract rabies and of that small percentage, an even smaller percentage will come in contact with humans or pets. With that said, it is always wise to practice common sense and use caution around them and avoid direct contact, as well as ensure that your pets are properly vaccinated. Bat bites and other physical contact may go undetected by individuals who are asleep, children and pets.

In addition to the foul smell and unsanitary conditions, accumulated bat droppings can support the growth of histoplasmosis, an airborne fungal disease very common in the Tri-State area. Dry attic environments usually do not support the growth of histoplasmosis spores, however attic cleanouts should never be conducted by a home or business owner! Many experts agree that the safest guano is undisturbed guano. Due to the risk of exposure during extraction, guano removal should be left to trained professionals with the proper safe and removal equipment.

We are here to meet the needs of residents, businesses, and municipalities. Public health and safety, as well as animal welfare are always given the highest priority.

The photo below was taken in a Cincinnati neighborhood. It shows squirrel chew on a City of Cincinnati trash can. As you can infer from the photo, squirrels are very opportunistic and will find food and shelter in many man-made structures, even garbage cans. Especially during these winter months when natural food supplies are low, squirrels will take advantage of food at bird feeders, trash cans, and any other food source. In addition, these cold winter months make man-made structures (and maybe containers) even more desirable.
