How to Get Rid of Bats in my House

March 7th, 2018

There is nothing more disturbing than discovering you have bats roosting in your attic or other areas of your home uninhabited by humans. Whether you hear them rustling throughout the night, or have encountered one that has mistakenly found entrance into your home, you want nothing more to have them gone and not a moment too soon. You Google, “How to get rid of bats in my house,” and a list of “do it yourself” solutions flood your page. You’re bombarded with information. You are not a biologist, you do not know your local wildlife laws, you are not a carpenter, and now you’re scared of contacting some zoonotic disease. Its now approaching midnight and you stumble back to bed ready to tackle the situation in the morning. Morning comes too soon because you had a restless nights sleep and you start reading about mothballs, mylar balloons, strobe lights, essential oils, and much much more. Unfortunately, as creative as the do it yourselfers get, they are very wrong when it comes to ridding your home of bats. The only way to effectively, and legally exclude bats from your home is to hire a seasoned professional even if you consider yourself more than handy. Tri State Wildlife is your go to company for all of your wildlife exclusion needs 859-635-0037.

Colony of bats in northern Kentucky home

The number one reason to hire a professional for getting rid of bats is peace of mind. Tri-State Wildlife’s technicians are thoroughly trained in bat eviction/venting procedures and educate their customers regarding the best solution to rid their property of a bat invasion. The process starts with a detailed inspection of the property designed to identify structural defects, as well as current and potential bat entry points that lead into the interiors of the structure. Even if you know where the bats are entering most bat colonies have multiple entrances into your home as well as areas that could easily be established as an entrance. The inspection is intended to assist in the evaluation of the overall bat colony within the building and offer our clients the best possible approach. In addition, to our detailed inspection Tri State Wildlife is more than happy to help put our customers minds at ease.

In addition to removal/exclusion services, Tri-State Wildlife also offers full and partial attic cleanouts. Tri State Wildlife employees are trained in safe and effective methods of removing bat guano and contaminated insulation. Due to the risk of exposure to diseases such as histoplasmosis proper protective gear and equipment is vital to a safe and effective cleanout.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a problem with bats in their home or structure give Tri State Wildlife a call today, 859-635-0037. Late winter/early spring is a great time to get started on the bat eviction process. Warm weather has been sporadically infiltrating the tri-state area the past couple of weeks so use it to your advantage to become one of the firsts in the area to rid your home of bats this season.

The news media is often guilty of sensationalizing stories about rabid bats or bat colonies in buildings and the dangers involved; however, like many native wildlife a very small percentage of bats contract rabies and of that small percentage, an even smaller percentage will come in contact with humans or pets. With that said, it is always wise to practice common sense and use caution around them and avoid direct contact, as well as ensure that your pets are properly vaccinated. Bat bits and other physical contact may go undetected by individuals who are asleep, children and pets.

In addition, to the foul smell and unsanitary conditions, accumulated bat droppings can support the growth of histoplasmosis, an airborne fungal disease very common in the Tri-State area. Dry attic environments usually do not support the growth of histoplasmosis spores, however attic cleanouts should never be conducted by a home or business owner. Due to the risk of exposure, guano removal should be left to trained professionals with the proper safe and removal equipment.

Northern Kentucky Bat Removal

Northern Kentucky Bat RemovalIf you suspect or know that bats are living in your attic or chimney, now is the time to begin the process of removing them. Warm weather means bats are frequently leaving their roost sites at dusk to feed on insects. Many bats choose to roost in the attics or chimneys of homes or buildings. You may suspect you have a bat problem if you see bat droppings at a bat entry point, or below it on the ground. If that isn’t the case, you may witness bats flying out of your home around dusk. Depending on the time of year, you may also hear noises coming from your attic or chimney. Sometimes noises signify a bat problem, but it may mean you may have another animal(s) invading your home.

Having bats in your home is an unsettling and serious problem, even if they are confined to the attic. Not only do they urinate and defecate anywhere they roost, causing staining and odor problems which are difficult to remove, they are associated with diseases which are dangerous to humans, including rabies and histoplasmosis (a lung disease caused by the spores of fungus which grow on their droppings or guano). While bats are very beneficial to humans because of their affinity for many flying insects, such as mosquitoes, if they find their way into your home and take up residence, they can also be some of the most destructive, dangerous, and expensive wildlife to control.

Our courteous staff works for you to provide a cost effective solution to your wildlife intrusion and/or damage issue. As a full service company, we initiate an Integrated Bat Management Program beginning with an inspection and customer education, followed by exclusion of  intrusive bats and repair of bat damage. TSWM also offers prevention, restoration, and cleanup services.

Tri-State Wildlife Management uses a variety of products and methods for bat repairs, prevention, and restoration. TSWM seals homes and businesses with specialized wildlife restoration products, installs custom and standard chimney caps, and install vent screens/coverings. TSWM provides habitat modification as another preventative technique. When cleanup services are needed or desired, it typically involves the removal of bat droppings and contaminated debris from attics or other bat invaded areas.

We strive for the most humane and environmentally effective techniques for dealing with bat problems. Tri-State Wildlife Management’s use of modern innovative methods provides sound bat management services to ensure the protection of our customers’ investments and health. Since bats are a protected species, removal should be done by a trained professional, such as our trained technicians.  Tri-State Wildlife Management is Certified Bat Standard Compliant by the National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA).

Covington, KY Bat Removal

Covington, KY Bat Removal: Bats are great mammals to have around. If you’ve ever observed a bat feeding at twilight, you already know why – they eat a variety of flying insects, including mosquitoes. Despite the advantages of having bats around, there are many serious disadvantages to having them in your home. First, they can create significant damage to structures. Bats create foul latrines, made up of both guano and urine that cause a horrible odor, soil insulation, and can weaken the structure. When entering and exiting a structure, bats defecate, leaving staining along the home. In addition, they leave black, oily rub marks at entries.

Bats also pose health/hygiene concerns including rabies, histoplasmosis, and bat bugs. When bats transmit rabies, it is most typically through a bite. If bitten, the bat should always be tested if it can be caught. If the bat is not caught, or if it tests positive for rabies, rabies shots must be taken. Without treatment, rabies ends in death. Sometimes a bat is found in the living space of a home. If the bat had access to children or anyone who may not know/may not be able to communicate that they’ve been bitten, rabies shots are encouraged. Although the most serious, rabies is not the most common threat that bats pose. Histoplasmosis is a common lung disease caused by a fungus that grows on guano. It is important to always wear the proper protective gear when in the same vicinity as bat guano, as the fungus is easily disturbed. Although bat bugs pose no serious health threat, just like bed bugs, they are a parasitic nuisance that nobody wants to live with.

The courteous staff at Tri-State Wildlife will work for you to provide a cost effective solution to your bat or wildlife intrusion and/or damage issue. As a full service company, we initiate an Integrated Bat Management Plan beginning with an inspection and customer education followed by bat removal and exclusion of intrusive bats or wildlife, clean-up, repair/restoration and prevention.

Tri-State Wildlife Management handles bat removal and exclusion differently than other home-invading species; instead of trapping, bats are removed only through an exclusion process. We use bat exclusion equipment that allows bats to leave your home, but the equipment makes reentry impossible. Bats can fit through the tiniest of gaps, so our experienced technician completes a thorough inspection of your home or business to determine all entry points and at risk areas. After we are sure all bats have left, entries are repaired with wildlife grade construction materials. Bats are very persistent creatures, and without all entries and at risk areas repaired, with bat deterrent materials, they will find a way back into your home. Tri-State Wildlife Management is so confident in their bat exclusion work that we back up our exclusion repairs with a 100% guarantee.

We strive for the most humane and environmentally effective techniques for dealing with bats and wildlife problems. Tri-State Wildlife Management’s use of modern innovative methods provides sound wildlife management services to ensure the protection of our customers’ investments and health.

Northern KY Bat Removal

Northern KY Bat Removal: Spring is the perfect time for Tri-State Wildlife Management (TSWM) to perform bat inspections, removal, exclusion, and repairs. Bat exclusion work involves sealing and repairing all current bat entries and exits, as well as all other construction gaps on your home. TSWM repairs all construction gaps on your home because they are areas susceptible to future bat entry. Once bats are prevented from using their current entry and exit points, they will attempt to gain access to the structure by other means. Sealing up vulnerable areas prevents bats from gaining access back into your home.

The same principles apply to condos and apartment complexes, schools, churches, hospitals and more – all at-risk/vulnerable areas should be sealed so that bats do not find another way into the structure once excluded from using their main entry points. Although TSWM always strongly advises going about bat exclusion in this way, the decision is ultimately up to the customer. Unfortunately, if other potential entries are not sealed, bats almost always find their way back in. It is much more cost effective to seal up the home before bats can reenter.

TSWM also offers full and partial attic cleanups. TSWM employees are trained in safe and effective methods of removing bat guano and contaminated insulation. In addition to the foul smell and unsanitary conditions, accumulated bat droppings can support the growth of histoplasmosis, an airborne fungal disease very common in the Tri-State Area. Due to the risk of exposure to diseases such as histoplasmosis, proper protective gear and equipment is vital to a safe and effective cleanup. For more information concerning bat exposure visit, the Center for Disease Control Website at: www.cdc.gov. TSWM is dedicated to resolving our customers’ bat problems and preventing bat issues in the future. Tri-State Wildlife Management is fully licensed and insured, and we stand behind all our work.

How are bats getting in my house?

How are bats getting in my house? For professional bat removal in Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, and Southeast Indiana, call Tri-State Wildlife Management at (859) 635-0037. Put our experience and expertise to work for you!

How are bats getting in my house? It is very upsetting if a bat finds it ways into the living space of your home, and it is unsettling to learn bats are roosting in your attic. Of course the first thing to do is determine how they are entering. We strongly recommend hiring a certified professional to ensure all possible entry points and vulnerable areas are identified. After a thorough home inspection, Tri-State Wildlife Management draws up a findings report that also details a plan of action, including removal, exclusion, and repair (restoration & cleanup when needed). A certified professional also has the experience and expertise needed to make sound ethical and legal decisions. TSWM does not harm any bats during the exclusion and removal process. In addition, TSWM ensures no bats are left in your attic at the time of exclusion.

If a bat(s) is in the living area of your home, it often means it has found a way down from your attic, although an open garage door, window, fireplace, or any construction gap can also allow bats access. It seems unthinkable, but bats can squeeze through an opening as small as 5/8” round or 3/8” x 3/4” long, so often bathroom vents, ceiling lighting, attic access doors, etc. allow bats to enter the living space of your home.

If bats are roosting in your attic, it may be difficult to pinpoint their entry. The presence of bat guano is a telltale sign that an entry point is near. You might spot it on the ground or along an outside wall underneath the opening. Depending on where the entry is, a pile may be found on the roof. Another sign is dark stain at the entry point, left there by bats as they come and go. Bats may have multiple entry points, so it is important to hire a knowledgeable professional to identify all possible entry points as well as identify vulnerable areas on your home to prevent bats from using those as entry points in the future.

For a professional bat inspection and findings report, as well as bat removal and exclusion, call Tri-State Wildlife Management at (859) 635-0037. Put our experience and expertise to work for you!

Why are Bats Roosting in my House?

Bats Roosting in my House Northern Kentucky

Bats like many animals are very opportunistic creatures and will take shelter in homes or structures that provide them with easy access from the elements, including wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. Since bats are so small and can fit into crevices or holes as small as 5/8 inch round or 3/8 inch wide by 5/8 inch long, they find many homes to be a suitable place to roost. Bats often enter structures along soffits, fascia, dormer corners, as well as gable and roof vents. These areas often lead into the attic where bats can easily establish a colony for roosting. Although bats may have established your structure as their roost, it may not be their only one. Bats often have multiple roosts where they can seek shelter on any given night. They also have established day time roosts, as they are nocturnal, where they will spend their time sleeping, as well night time roosts where they will stop to rest while out feeding. In addition, they also choose to roost in open spaces such as trees, porches, and bridges on warm summer nights when the weather is favorable.

It is not uncommon to be on a bat exclusion job and have multiple neighbors with the same colony of bats using their structures as an established roost. It is also very common to have similar entry points on these homes due to the neighborhood having structures of the same age, design and quality. Since bats will use adjacent structures as roost sites, neighbors will occasionally see an increase in bat activity near their home after bats are excluded from your structure. Some people will joke that they inherited your bat problem; however this is not the case. They have simply seen an increase in activity since one of the bats’ roost sites have been eliminated, therefore increasing the frequency of their use of their structure.

One of the many mistakes customers make when trying to exclude bats from their home without hiring a knowledgeable professional is assuming all bats have exited a structure prior to making repairs or attempted repairs. Bats can go long periods of time without leaving their roosts for feeding, so one cannot assume that all bats have left the roost on any given night. This is a very serious scenario considering someone could mistakenly trap the bats within the structure. This often leads to a much more serious situation with bats entering the living quarters (which they usually try to avoid) in search of an exit. This is just one of the reasons why a knowledgeable professional is vital to ridding your home or structure of bats.

Bat Removal Covington, KYCovington, KY Bat Removal: Bats are great mammals to have around in the warm months, as they hunt mosquitoes and other insects at dusk, just when insects’ presence are at their climax. However, bats become unwelcome guests when they find a nice comfortable home in your home or business, entering through construction gaps, unsecured louver vents, chimneys, or any hole larger than 3/8 inches. If your home or business is occupied by bats, you may witness bats going in and out, or bat droppings (guano) underneath the bats’ main entrance(s). Homes and buildings are great places for bats to use as hibernating sites and as maternal roosts (a place to raise their young before they are able to fly).

What should you do if you find yourself sharing your home or business with bats? Tri-State Wildlife Management (TSWM) is your solution to your bat problem. Our courteous staff will work for you to provide a cost effective solution to your bat intrusion or damage issue. As a full service company, we initiate an Integrated Management Plan beginning with a full bat inspection and customer education followed by bat removal and exclusionclean-up, repair/restoration and prevention. The removal process used by TSWM allows for bats to exit your attic while preventing reentry. During this process, no bats are harmed and they easily find another place to lodge. Bats are protected under federal and state law; however, TSWM has the expertise and experience to offer legal and humane exclusions and repairs.

Since bats are persistent, they often attempt to use new entry points into a structure after their main entry is sealed. Tri-State Wildlife Management offers effective solutions to this issue as part of your Integrated Management Plan. The slightest construction gap or vulnerable area on your home can become another bat entry, so TSWM repairs and seals all at-risk areas. All attics if not sealed properly run the risk of needing bat removal at one time or another. A contractor’s or homeowner’s repairs and materials may not keep bats out of your home. Wildlife grade materials properly installed by TSWM are guaranteed. When addressing a bat issue in your home or business, best practices should always be used. The experienced professionals at Tri-State Wildlife Management will provide you with a cost effective solution to your bat issue.

Tri-State Wildlife Management – Protecting You, Your Property, and Your Investment

Bat Removal Kenton County, KY: In our area, bats typically hibernate the winter long, the exception being warmer winter days when you may spot a bat(s) outside. Bats often take advantage of the comfort of attics and chimneys, both in the winter and the summer. Crevices of homes make perfect hibernation spots in the winter and maternity colonies or roost sites in the summer. With winter right around the corner, now is the time to rid your attic of bats. If bats have access to your attic now, they are sure to use it as their hibernation site in the colder months.

Fall is the perfect time to remove and exclude bats from your home or business, since bats are not yet hibernating, and all the young born this year are able to fly. Tri-State Wildlife Management (TSWM) uses special vents for the bat removal process which allow bats to leave your attic as normal to hunt while prohibiting reentry. After all bats have left your attic, permanent repairs are made to seal entry and exit points.
