Cincinnati, OH – Squirrels Chewing Wires is Fire Hazard: PNC’s Festival of Lights at the Cincinnati Zoo is a wonderful Cincinnati tradition that attracts many families this time of year. Unfortunately, the lights (or more specifically, the wires) are also attracting squirrels. The zoo is teeming with squirrels year round, as it’s a wonderful squirrel habitat with an abundance of food thanks to tulip bulbs and visitors’ lunches. Squirrels are notorious chewers, and will chew on just about anything. One of their favorites happens to be electrical wires. Zoo staff is scrambling to replace strands of light ruined by squirrels. This news coverage of the squirrel issue at the Cincinnati Zoo’s Festival of Lights brings to the forefront a dangerous problem many people never think about. Anytime a squirrel enters a home or structure with electrical wiring, they create a fire hazard. Squirrels have incisors that continuously grow, and the only way to keep them short is to gnaw. Squirrels gain access to the inside of homes (usually to the attic) by chewing holes through outside construction materials, including siding, gutters, fascia board, shingles, and drip edge. Once inside, they chew on rafters and electrical wiring. For some reason, just as the squirrels are attracted to the lights at the zoo, they are attracted to electrical wiring in homes.
