Skunk Removal Cold Spring, KY: For about the last month, skunks in our area have been dormant, laying low and waiting out the cold weather. Late January marks the beginning of the skunk mating season in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area. The onset of breeding season means skunks will begin traveling more frequently and further in search of a mate. Typically skunks stay in a 1/2 to 2 mile diameter area, but during mating season, a male may travel 4 to 5 miles a night. Due to increased travels, you will likely start seeing more skunks hit on the roads.  You will also begin smelling skunk musk for a variety of reasons related to an increase in travels. First, when a skunk is hit on the road, their anal glands that store their musk rupture; second, skunks in unfamiliar territory encounter dogs, cats, raccoons, etc., and they spray to protect themselves; third, a male skunk may spray another suitor to ward him off, or a female may spray a male if uninterested.

Skunk musk can be smelled from a mile away. In addition, if an animal or area has been sprayed by a skunk, it will linger for quite some time. Anderson Township, OH Dead Deer Removal: November is an important month regarding deer in the greater Cincinnati area. Three things can be observed in the month of November, each having a common cause. To start with, Tri-State Wildlife Management receives a spike of calls from customers in need of deer carcass removal. Secondly, many deer are hit by vehicles. According to State Farm Insurance, “November is the No. 1 month for deer-vehicle collisions, followed by October and December.” Lastly, deer hunting seasons in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana all include November in some fashion, be it gun or bow season.

The cause of all three of these is found in the biology and behavior of white tailed deer. Mating season for deer occurs in the late fall, leading to an increase in movement, especially for bucks, in search of does. Dead Animal Removal Taylor Mill, KY

Spring is here, and we’ve finally had some warm days. Tuesday of this week was especially sunny and warm in the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area, including Taylor Mill, KY. On the other hand, yesterday and today have exhibited the rainy side of spring with torrential downpours and thunderstorms. Despite the less-than-stellar weather, yesterday was a full day of inspections, checking traps and indicators, and a dead animal removal call.

Dead Animal Removal Taylor Mill, KY Andrew and Andy (A & A), Tri-State Wildlife Management‘s technicians, went to Taylor Mill, KY for the dead animal removal call. Andy’s a fairly new technician and has never gone on a dead animal removal call, so Andrew took this opportunity to train him. The suspected dead animal was under an office trailer. First, A & A went into the office to see if they could somewhat locate the smell, but to no avail. Not being able to smell anything from inside meant they couldn’t pinpoint where under the office trailer they should start their search. Suited up in protectivee gear, A & A belly crawled under the trailer, keeping their eyes peeled for any sign of fur. There was a slight dead animal smell, but it wasn’t overwhelming…yet.

After belly crawling under the building for just a couple of minutes, Andy informed Andrew that he saw a raccoon tail. Andrew’s first question was, “Is it dead?” Although being hired for dead animal removal, you can never be too careful when dealing with wildlife. He wanted to make sure they didn’t stumble upon anything live while being in such a vulnerable situation – there are no fast get-aways when you have to belly crawl. You’re also not in the best stance to defend yourself.

Unsure of the status of the raccoon, and wanting to keep a safe distance until it was determined, A & A decided to throw a few pebbles at the lump of fur to see if it moved. It did not…they moved in.

Andy, anxious to pull his first dead animal gig, grabbed the raccoon tail, and as he did, the horrible, torturous smell of a long-been-dead-animal emitted from the raccoon. Gagging and sputtering through full face masks, A & A belly crawled back out from underneath the office trailer.

Unless just fur and bones are left, the longer an animal has been dead, the stinkier it is. Let’s just say this one was a doozy. Working in wildlife removal and control, A & A are used to their fair share of less-than-pleasant smells, but this raccoon takes the cake. Both technicians had to shower before going on their remaining calls, for their sakes, but especially for other customers’ sakes!

Skunks are very active in the month of February as their mating season begins in late January. With this increase in activity comes an increase in skunk sprays. You may have experienced this smell recently near your home or as you are traveling on the roads. Skunks tend to spray during the mating season for two reasons. First, 2 males competing for the same female will spray, and females will spray to make males aware when she is not interested.

Oftentimes, skunks are prey to road traffic, but especially during the breeding season. Regularly, a skunk has a range of one half to two miles, but during the mating season, male skunks may travel 4 to 5 miles a night. Roadkill skunks give off the skunk spray smell because their anal glands that store their musk rupture.

Increased skunk activity may also cause increase sprays towards curious pets or other animals. Sometimes home or business owners mistakenly think they have a skunk problem when a pet or other animal gets sprayed and seeks shelter near their home or business. Northern Kentucky Bat Removal

The news media is often guilty of sensationalizing stories about rabid bats or bat colonies in buildings and the dangers involved; however, like many native wildlife a very small percentage of bats contract rabies and of that small percentage, an even smaller percentage will come in contact with humans or pets. With that said, it is always wise to practice common sense and use caution around them and avoid direct contact, as well as ensure that your pets are properly vaccinated. Bat bites and other physical contact may go undetected by individuals who are asleep, children and pets.

In addition to the foul smell and unsanitary conditions, accumulated bat droppings can support the growth of histoplasmosis, an airborne fungal disease very common in the Tri-State area. Wildlife Signs and Sounds – Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem?

Oftentimes when wild animals occupy a structures or property, they leave behind noticeable signs. The following are signs of raccoons, squirrels, and skunks. Some of the most noticeable signs raccoons leave behind include smudges from climbing on buildings and downspouts, as well as latrines which are very visually observable and strong in smell. Gray squirrels typically

do not use latrines; instead, their droppings and urine are scattered. Chewed rafters and electrical wires may be signs of squirrel damage, as squirrels have a need to gnaw and seem to like the taste of wire insulation. Many squirrel entry points into structures are gnawed and chewed holes. In addition, fur can get caught in splintered wood at entry points. Smears are oftentimes visible at entry points into buildings if the entry has been used for a significant amount of time, and occasionally muddy or sooty footprints can be found leading to entry points. Skunks are known for the strong odor emitted when they spray as a defense mechanism; however, skunk smell can be detected from a mile away so smelling the odor does not necessarily mean a skunk(s) is present. In addition, when another animal is sprayed by a skunk, the odor stays on them for a significant amount of time. An odor that increases rather than decreased in intensity may be a sign that a skunk has died nearby.

In addition to visual signs, wild animals emit a variety of voices and sounds, all serving different purposes. The widely popular song, “The Fox (What does the fox say?)” may have you wondering just what sounds a fox truly does make, in addition to other wild animals in the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area. Raccoons make various sounds including complaint and distress calls, as well as purring, chattering, cooing, and chirping. Squirrels make a variety of sounds including churrs, barks, and squeals. Churrs express anger, barks act as warnings, and squeals occur when a squirrel is distressed or in pain. Skunks emit sounds such as screeching, whining, chirping, whimpering, grumbling, grunting, and lip-smacking.
