Squirrel babies

Do you think you have squirrels or even squirrel babies living in your attic? Call Tri-State Wildlife Management – Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s squirrel removal company! (859)635-0037 or (513)853-0037

When do squirrels have their babies? Some squirrel babies in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have already been born, and female squirrels will continue to give birth through April. Litters of squirrels range from 1 to 7 young. When conditions are favorable (as they typically are for urban squirrels) squirrels can breed multiple times a year. Female squirrels often use attics, chimneys, soffit areas, and gutter lines as nest sites and dens to raise their young. Tri-State Wildlife Management must take extra precaution when excluding squirrels out of attics and other structural voids to make sure there aren’t any juveniles trapped inside. Juveniles can begin venturing out of the nest around 6 to 7 weeks. Female squirrels wean the juveniles at 10 to 12 weeks. At this point, the juveniles are half of their adult weight.

The photo below was taken in a Cincinnati neighborhood. It shows squirrel chew on a City of Cincinnati trash can. As you can infer from the photo, squirrels are very opportunistic and will find food and shelter in many man-made structures, even garbage cans. Especially during these winter months when natural food supplies are low, squirrels will take advantage of food at bird feeders, trash cans, and any other food source. In addition, these cold winter months make man-made structures (and maybe containers) even more desirable.

You can protect your health, home, and property from squirrel invasion and damage. First, if you suspect you may have squirrels in your home, a trapping and exclusion program is usually the most efficient solution. The technicians of Tri-State Wildlife Management bring their experience and expertise in squirrel trapping and exclusion to work for you. All openings and vulnerable areas on your home should be sealed or screened after ensuring all squirrels are out of the structure. Tri-State Wildlife Management has a trained carpenter on staff who does custom repairs and restorations.

In addition to trapping, exclusion, and repairs, Tri-State Wildlife Management also specializes in habitat modification. Home and business owners can take extra steps to make their property and structure less desirable for squirrels and other wildlife. Habitat modification may go a long way in deterring squirrels and other wildlife from becoming a nuisance at your home or business.

The courteous staff at Tri-State Wildlife Management will work for you to provide a cost effective solution to your wildlife intrusion and/or damage. As a full service company we will initiate an Integrated Squirrel Management Program beginning with an inspection and customer education followed by removal of intrusive wildlife, clean-up repair/restoration and prevention.

Squirrel Removal Northern Kentucky

January 24th, 2014

Tri-State Wildlife Management will get rid of squirrels in your attic! For squirrel removal in Northern Kentucky or Cincinnati, call (859) 635-0037 or (513) 853-0037!

Squirrels most often occupy attics and other cavities of homes and business during the fall, winter, and spring. During the hot summer months, many home-dwelling squirrels opt to live in tree cavities to stay cooler. Even though that is the norm, many squirrels choose to stay in the comforts of their man-made home.

If you have squirrels taking up residence in your home this summer, call Tri-State Wildlife Management to take care of your problem. Our courteous staff will work for you to provide a cost effective solution to your squirrel intrusion and/or damage problems. As a full service company we will initiate an Integrated Squirrel Management Program beginning with an inspection and customer education followed by removal of intrusive squirrels, clean-up, repair/restoration and prevention.

We strive for the most humane and environmentally effective techniques for dealing with squirrel problems. The uses of modern innovative methods provide sound wildlife management services to ensure the protection of our customer’s investments and health. We will repair damages, install custom and standard chimney caps, seal homes and businesses to prevent squirrels from entering.

Our technician completes a full outside inspection of your home, and usually an attic inspection as well.  The inspection reveals the squirrel(s)’ entry and exit points as well as at risk areas on the home where a squirrel may be able to chew a new entry point when their main entry is repaired. Either over the phone prior to the inspection or while the technician is completing the inspection, the customer is filled in on the how’s and why’s of the the Integrated Squirrel Management Program. If the squirrel(s) is in an attic, it is unlikely that they can be removed during the inspection, although juveniles can sometimes be retrieved. This is called direct capture. Typically, traps are used to removed animals from the attic. Trapping alone will not prevent other squirrels from occupying your attic.

Tri-State Wildlife Management repairs all entries and at risk areas to prevent a future squirrel invasion and damage.  All repairs and restorations are aesthetically pleasing so you can have structural integrity and a beautiful home. Repairing entry points alone is not always sufficient to prevent future squirrel problems. Bird feeders will attract squirrels to your property, and trees as far as 10-15 feet away from your home may provide easy access to your roof, although squirrels are very capable of obtaining roof access without the help of trees.  When clean-up is required, which is most typical when dealing with flying squirrels, Tri-State Wildlife Management takes care of that too!

Wildlife Signs and Sounds

December 12th, 2013

Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem? Don’t wait for the problem to get worse – call Tri-State Wildlife Management, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s wildlife removal professionals! (513) 853-0037 or (859) 635-0037

Wildlife Signs and Sounds – Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem?

Oftentimes when wild animals occupy a structures or property, they leave behind noticeable signs. The following are signs of raccoons, squirrels, and skunks. Some of the most noticeable signs raccoons leave behind include smudges from climbing on buildings and downspouts, as well as latrines which are very visually observable and strong in smell. Gray squirrels typically

do not use latrines; instead, their droppings and urine are scattered. Chewed rafters and electrical wires may be signs of squirrel damage, as squirrels have a need to gnaw and seem to like the taste of wire insulation. Many squirrel entry points into structures are gnawed and chewed holes. In addition, fur can get caught in splintered wood at entry points. Smears are oftentimes visible at entry points into buildings if the entry has been used for a significant amount of time, and occasionally muddy or sooty footprints can be found leading to entry points. Skunks are known for the strong odor emitted when they spray as a defense mechanism; however, skunk smell can be detected from a mile away so smelling the odor does not necessarily mean a skunk(s) is present. In addition, when another animal is sprayed by a skunk, the odor stays on them for a significant amount of time. An odor that increases rather than decreased in intensity may be a sign that a skunk has died nearby.

In addition to visual signs, wild animals emit a variety of voices and sounds, all serving different purposes. The widely popular song, “The Fox (What does the fox say?)” may have you wondering just what sounds a fox truly does make, in addition to other wild animals in the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area. If you want to check out a comparison of the fox sounds in the song versus true fox sounds, click here to see a Youtube segment of Animalist News. Raccoons make various sounds including complaint and distress calls, as well as purring, chattering, cooing, and chirping. Squirrels make a variety of sounds including churrs, barks, and squeals. Churrs express anger, barks act as warnings, and squeals occur when a squirrel is distressed or in pain. Skunks emit sounds such as screeching, whining, chirping, whimpering, grumbling, grunting, and lip-smacking.

Do you have a squirrel problem?

October 15th, 2013

Do you have a squirrel problem? Tri-State Wildlife Management began the month of October focusing on two species of wildlife that were causing issues for people in the Cincinnati Tri-State Area, bats and squirrels. In the past week, the phone calls have become a bit more varied as raccoons, skunks, and groundhogs are finding comfortable dens within human structures or property. However, we’re coming into a time of year when squirrels are notorious for invading attics and crawl spaces looking to set up camp for the colder months. There is much more to be said about squirrels and their habits at this time of year, so a related blog will be written soon.

Juvenile Squirrel

Cincinnati Squirrel Removal – General Squirrel Information Grey squirrels are found throughout much of the eastern portion of the United States and Canada. They enjoy activity during the day, but are limited to the morning and evening on hot summer days. We in the Greater Cincinnati Area are most familiar with the grey squirrel; however, fox squirrels are abundant in our region as well. Squirrels are considered rodents, using their teeth much like a rat to gnaw/chew constantly. They need to gnaw to keep their teeth (incisors) worn down so that they do not grow into their jaw.

Squirrels live in dens in trees or shays (drays), which is a nest made from leaves and sticks. Squirrels do not hibernate, so they are active all winter. Favorite foods are acorns, walnuts and hickory nuts in the winter. If food is scarce, they will eat tree bark. Squirrels will eat tree buds in the spring and fruit and maple pods in the summer. Bird feeders are inviting “diners” for squirrels, as the birdseed is tasty and easily accessible.

Adult squirrels, usually at 1 year of age, begin breeding in January (give or take a month) and June (give or take a month), and bear their young during April and September (give or take a month for each). There are usually two litters annually. Litters typically consist of 3 – 4 kits. The kits stay with the female until they are 10 weeks of age. Tri-State Wildlife Management gets a large influx of calls from people with squirrel issues in the spring and in the fall because an attic is an attractive home for females looking to raise her young. In a forest habitat, when they leave the nest, they sometimes need to spread out to find suitable food; however, urban squirrels can and do find excellent living quarters and plentiful food available right where they were born, thanks to their human neighbors.

Squirrels become a nuisance when their eating habits and home choices conflict with humans. Homeowners can discourage squirrels by eliminating bird feeders and cutting back tree limbs (8’ from home) and entire trees. Keeping squirrels out of attics is the biggest problem facing the homeowner. Their constant gnawing can make a tiny hole a perfect entry point into the house. Squirrels living in an attic, ceiling or walls become more than a nuisance if the squirrel decides to gnaw on electrical wires. This is the number one reason homeowners remove the animal. Tri-State Wildlife Management is a full service company offering repairs and restorations for squirrel damage.

Because of expanding human populations reducing wildlife habitat and creating even more comfortable habitat, many species of wildlife at one time or another require management actions to reduce conflicts with people, property, and pets or with other wildlife species. In many cases wildlife species have found a way to co-exist with their human neighbors. Sometimes conflicts do arise and action is needed to protect the wildlife, humans, pets or property.

The goal of Tri-State Wildlife Management is to alleviate the problems that sometimes occur where wildlife and humans co-exist by providing information for homeowners to make good decisions to deter wildlife whenever possible. Sometimes wildlife needs to be removed when no other solution can be reached. Proper wildlife management and wildlife welfare are of the utmost importance.
