A Scurry From Above – Noises in the Attic

It’s morning and you are enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee and you suspect you hear something in the attic above your head. You turn down the news and then there’s nothing. A few days later the same thing happens so you tell your spouse that you’ve been hearing noises in the attic. They glance up in the attic, but everything appears as normal and they haven’t heard anything strange, so the sounds are attributed to the house moving and settling as the temperatures outside change. Two weeks later you hear scurrying and a full-blown ruckus above your head. You have a problem. You have an animal intruder! Scenarios like this one are common during the months of April and May and are most likely attributed to squirrels. Female squirrels often use attics, chimneys, soffit areas, and gutter lines as nest sites and dens to raise their young. Squirrels are active during the day and sleep at night so noises from a family of squirrels are typically heard throughout the day.

Tree squirrels breed twice a year (December-January and May-June) with 1-7 young being born in February-March and July-August. Juvenile squirrels become active as early as six to seven weeks making their presence known to homeowners. Like many young children the normally quiet mother can’t keep her litter quiet and they can often be heard scurrying, scratching, and even barking from their living quarters. Did you Know that squirrels are a lot like Spiderman?  No, they don’t wear red tights and no they can’t shoot spider webs, but they can maneuver a building a lot like Spiderman. Recently I had an encounter with “Spidey Squirrel” at a client’s house in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I was at the client’s house looking for sign of squirrel entry.  I found a hole in an eave of the house so I made my way towards the hole. Suddenly a squirrel shot out of the hole missing my face by a few inches.  The squirrel then leaped two stories from the roof to the ground. When I climbed down off the roof I made my way to the back of the house and wouldn’t you know it, there was Spidey Squirrel.  The squirrel then scampered back to the house and climbed right up the brick towards the roof just like he was Spiderman.

I am often asked by new clients, “If I cut down the tree next to my house, will that prevent squirrels from getting into my house?”.  Although it could help a little, the answer is “No”. In my experience (like my encounter with Spidey Squirrel), squirrels in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati will climb up almost any surface to access a home’s attic, soffits, and chimney. Squirrels breed between mid-December to early January, so young may be present as early as the very end of January. Young begin venturing outside at about 10 to 12 weeks when they are weaned, which is roughly sometime in April or May. In order to remedy a squirrel problem during a time when young are present, TSWM must often go into an attic to reach juveniles.

Summer is over and fall is well underway. This means that wild animals are beginning to prepare for the cold winter. Squirrels are fattening up on mast (tree fruits and nuts), which helps them stay warm and acts as a reserve when food is scarce during the winter. General Squirrel Information Grey squirrels are found throughout much of the eastern portion of the United States and Canada. They enjoy activity during the day, but are limited to the morning and evening on hot summer days. We in the Greater Cincinnati Area are most familiar with the grey squirrel; however, fox squirrels are abundant in our region as well. Squirrels are considered rodents, using their teeth much like a rat to gnaw/chew constantly. They need to gnaw to keep their teeth (incisors) worn down so that they do not grow into their jaw.

Squirrels live in dens in trees or shays (drays), which is a nest made from leaves and sticks. Squirrels do not hibernate, so they are active all winter. Favorite foods are acorns, walnuts and hickory nuts in the winter. If food is scarce, they will eat tree bark. Squirrels will eat tree buds in the spring and fruit and maple pods in the summer. Bird feeders are inviting “diners” for squirrels, as the birdseed is tasty and easily accessible.

Adult squirrels, usually at 1 year of age, begin breeding in January (give or take a month) and June (give or take a month), and bear their young during April and September (give or take a month for each). There are usually two litters annually. Litters typically consist of 3 – 4 kits. The kits stay with the female until they are 10 weeks of age. Tri-State Wildlife Management gets a large influx of calls from people with squirrel issues in the spring and in the fall because an attic is an attractive home for females looking to raise her young. In a forest habitat, when they leave the nest, they sometimes need to spread out to find suitable food; however, urban squirrels can and do find excellent living quarters and plentiful food available right where they were born, thanks to their human neighbors.

Squirrels become a nuisance when their eating habits and home choices conflict with humans. Homeowners can discourage squirrels by eliminating bird feeders and cutting back tree limbs (8’ from home) and entire trees. Keeping squirrels out of attics is the biggest problem facing the homeowner. Their constant gnawing can make a tiny hole a perfect entry point into the house. Squirrels living in an attic, ceiling or walls become more than a nuisance if the squirrel decides to gnaw on electrical wires. This is the number one reason homeowners remove the animal. Squirrel babies

When do squirrels have their babies? Some squirrel babies in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have already been born, and female squirrels will continue to give birth through April. Litters of squirrels range from 1 to 7 young. When conditions are favorable (as they typically are for urban squirrels) squirrels can breed multiple times a year. Female squirrels often use attics, chimneys, soffit areas, and gutter lines as nest sites and dens to raise their young. Tri-State Wildlife Management must take extra precaution when excluding squirrels out of attics and other structural voids to make sure there aren’t any juveniles trapped inside. Juveniles can begin venturing out of the nest around 6 to 7 weeks. Female squirrels wean the juveniles at 10 to 12 weeks. At this point, the juveniles are half of their adult weight.
