Scratching In My Wall

February 24th, 2014

Call Tri-State Wildlife Management if you hear scratching in your wall at night! We will take care of any wildlife problem including bats! (859) 635-0037

Having warmer evenings the past few nights has really been making our phone ring. Warm evenings mean that bats are active and driving people crazy. You may be thinking, “What is scratching in my wall?” If you hear a scratching sound in your wall or ceiling on a warm night, you more than likely have bats living among you.

The other night we had several calls where customers heard scratching in their walls and ceiling. With the weather being as warm as it has been I knew it was probably bats. Some of my customers made it very clear they had bats once they told me they also heard a high pitched screeching sound coming from their walls and attic. This sound is not familiar to most people unless they have had encounters with bats previously.

On Friday night we responded to a call in Ft. Thomas, KY where a customer had a bat flying around in their house. We responded immediately and captured the bat. After talking to the customer we found out that the bat was in the same room as a sleeping baby. We explained to the customer that bats can potentially have rabies and being in the same room as the baby, they may not know if the baby had been bitten. Even though the chances of being bitten by a bat carrying rabies is slim, we always suggest that the bat be sent off for testing just to be sure.

After an exciting night of hunting down a bat we returned to the customer’s house the next morning to perform an inspection of the house for bat entry. If a bat is found in a house this time of year there are usually more bats living in the house. This customer also indicated to us that they had been hearing a scratching sound in there ceiling on warmer nights. After the inspection was complete we were able to determine where the bats were getting in and we were able to let the customer know what would need to be done to remove the bats and keep them out.

Have you been thinking, “What is scratching in my wall” or know you have bats in your house? Give Tri-State Wildlife Management a call at (859)635-0037 or visit our website at Tri-StateWildlifeManagement.com. We service the Northern Kentucky, Indiana, and Cincinnati Tri-State area.

Northern Kentucky Bat Removal

The news media is often guilty of sensationalizing stories about rabid bats or bat colonies in buildings and the dangers involved; however, like many native wildlife a very small percentage of bats contract rabies and of that small percentage, an even smaller percentage will come in contact with humans or pets. With that said, it is always wise to practice common sense and use caution around them and avoid direct contact, as well as ensure that your pets are properly vaccinated. Bat bites and other physical contact may go undetected by individuals who are asleep, children and pets.

In addition to the foul smell and unsanitary conditions, accumulated bat droppings can support the growth of histoplasmosis, an airborne fungal disease very common in the Tri-State area. Dry attic environments usually do not support the growth of histoplasmosis spores, however attic cleanouts should never be conducted by a home or business owner! Many experts agree that the safest guano is undisturbed guano. Due to the risk of exposure during extraction, guano removal should be left to trained professionals with the proper safe and removal equipment.

The photo below was taken in a Cincinnati neighborhood. It shows squirrel chew on a City of Cincinnati trash can. As you can infer from the photo, squirrels are very opportunistic and will find food and shelter in many man-made structures, even garbage cans. Especially during these winter months when natural food supplies are low, squirrels will take advantage of food at bird feeders, trash cans, and any other food source. In addition, these cold winter months make man-made structures (and maybe containers) even more desirable.

Bats

Bat Removal Northern Kentucky Bats become a nuisance when they roost in large numbers in houses and businesses. Despite their usefulness, discovering or even suspecting bats living in your home or business is unsettling. Due to the breeding and roosting habits of bats, timing the removal of a bat colony is crucial to both the success of the exclusion as well as its legality and therefore best left to the experts.

Bats often enter the occupied spaces of businesses or residences due to their roost being in close proximity to open windows, doors, and attic access. Tri-State Wildlife Management’s technicians are thoroughly trained in bat eviction/venting procedures and educate their customers regarding the best solution to rid their property of a bat invasion. The process starts with a meticulous inspection of the property designed to identify structural defects, as well as current and potential bat entry points that lead into the interiors of the structure. The inspection is intended to assist in the evaluation of the overall bat colony within the condition of the building.

In addition to removal/exclusion services, Tri-State Wildlife Management (TSWM) also offers full and partial attic cleanouts. TSWM employees are trained in safe and effective methods of removing bat guano and contaminated insulation. Due to the risk of exposure to diseases such as histoplasmosis, proper protective gear and equipment is vital to a safe and effective cleanout. TSWM is committed to working with home and business owners to eradicate their nuisance wildlife issue.

Squirrel Removal Northern Kentucky

January 24th, 2014

Tri-State Wildlife Management will get rid of squirrels in your attic! For squirrel removal in Northern Kentucky or Cincinnati, call (859) 635-0037 or (513) 853-0037!

Squirrels most often occupy attics and other cavities of homes and business during the fall, winter, and spring. During the hot summer months, many home-dwelling squirrels opt to live in tree cavities to stay cooler. Even though that is the norm, many squirrels choose to stay in the comforts of their man-made home.

If you have squirrels taking up residence in your home this summer, call Tri-State Wildlife Management to take care of your problem. Our courteous staff will work for you to provide a cost effective solution to your squirrel intrusion and/or damage problems. As a full service company we will initiate an Integrated Squirrel Management Program beginning with an inspection and customer education followed by removal of intrusive squirrels, clean-up, repair/restoration and prevention.

We strive for the most humane and environmentally effective techniques for dealing with squirrel problems. The uses of modern innovative methods provide sound wildlife management services to ensure the protection of our customer’s investments and health. We will repair damages, install custom and standard chimney caps, seal homes and businesses to prevent squirrels from entering.

Our technician completes a full outside inspection of your home, and usually an attic inspection as well.  The inspection reveals the squirrel(s)’ entry and exit points as well as at risk areas on the home where a squirrel may be able to chew a new entry point when their main entry is repaired. Either over the phone prior to the inspection or while the technician is completing the inspection, the customer is filled in on the how’s and why’s of the the Integrated Squirrel Management Program. If the squirrel(s) is in an attic, it is unlikely that they can be removed during the inspection, although juveniles can sometimes be retrieved. This is called direct capture. Typically, traps are used to removed animals from the attic. Trapping alone will not prevent other squirrels from occupying your attic.

Tri-State Wildlife Management repairs all entries and at risk areas to prevent a future squirrel invasion and damage.  All repairs and restorations are aesthetically pleasing so you can have structural integrity and a beautiful home. Repairing entry points alone is not always sufficient to prevent future squirrel problems. Bird feeders will attract squirrels to your property, and trees as far as 10-15 feet away from your home may provide easy access to your roof, although squirrels are very capable of obtaining roof access without the help of trees.  When clean-up is required, which is most typical when dealing with flying squirrels, Tri-State Wildlife Management takes care of that too!

Wildlife Signs and Sounds

December 12th, 2013

Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem? Don’t wait for the problem to get worse – call Tri-State Wildlife Management, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s wildlife removal professionals! (513) 853-0037 or (859) 635-0037

Wildlife Signs and Sounds – Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem?

Oftentimes when wild animals occupy a structures or property, they leave behind noticeable signs. The following are signs of raccoons, squirrels, and skunks. Some of the most noticeable signs raccoons leave behind include smudges from climbing on buildings and downspouts, as well as latrines which are very visually observable and strong in smell. Gray squirrels typically

do not use latrines; instead, their droppings and urine are scattered. Chewed rafters and electrical wires may be signs of squirrel damage, as squirrels have a need to gnaw and seem to like the taste of wire insulation. Many squirrel entry points into structures are gnawed and chewed holes. In addition, fur can get caught in splintered wood at entry points. Smears are oftentimes visible at entry points into buildings if the entry has been used for a significant amount of time, and occasionally muddy or sooty footprints can be found leading to entry points. Skunks are known for the strong odor emitted when they spray as a defense mechanism; however, skunk smell can be detected from a mile away so smelling the odor does not necessarily mean a skunk(s) is present. In addition, when another animal is sprayed by a skunk, the odor stays on them for a significant amount of time. An odor that increases rather than decreased in intensity may be a sign that a skunk has died nearby.

In addition to visual signs, wild animals emit a variety of voices and sounds, all serving different purposes. The widely popular song, “The Fox (What does the fox say?)” may have you wondering just what sounds a fox truly does make, in addition to other wild animals in the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area. If you want to check out a comparison of the fox sounds in the song versus true fox sounds, click here to see a Youtube segment of Animalist News. Raccoons make various sounds including complaint and distress calls, as well as purring, chattering, cooing, and chirping. Squirrels make a variety of sounds including churrs, barks, and squeals. Churrs express anger, barks act as warnings, and squeals occur when a squirrel is distressed or in pain. Skunks emit sounds such as screeching, whining, chirping, whimpering, grumbling, grunting, and lip-smacking.

Do you have a squirrel problem? Tri-State Wildlife Management began the month of October focusing on two species of wildlife that were causing issues for people in the Cincinnati Tri-State Area, bats and squirrels. In the past week, the phone calls have become a bit more varied as raccoons, skunks, and groundhogs are finding comfortable dens within human structures or property. However, we’re coming into a time of year when squirrels are notorious for invading attics and crawl spaces looking to set up camp for the colder months. There is much more to be said about squirrels and their habits at this time of year, so a related blog will be written soon.
