Summer is over and fall is well underway. This means that wild animals are beginning to prepare for the cold winter. Squirrels are fattening up on mast (tree fruits and nuts), which helps them stay warm and acts as a reserve when food is scarce during the winter. Squirrels also collect and bury food in shallow holes (caches) to be eaten later. Raccoons are eating more too in preparation for winter when food is more scarce. In the Greater Cincinnati area, raccoons may become inactive if there is severe cold or a long winter storm, but they typically still venture out of their dens in search of food.

Not only are squirrels and raccoons fattening up in preparation for winter, but they are also searching for a nice, comfortable den. In cities and suburbs, wildlife often takes advantage of man-made structures such as houses; more specifically, attics and chimneys. Squirrels and raccoons typically return to their previous cold weather den sites, so if wildlife has taken up residence in an attic in years past, most likely, they will return. Habituated squirrels and raccoons must be trapped and the entry points sealed in order to prevent reentry. It’s important to note that if a homeowner has had squirrel or raccoon issues in the past but did not trap the violators, they will attempt, usually successfully, to gain access into a home by chewing a new entry. In a similar scenario, if a homeowner has wildlife entry issues in the past, it may come back to haunt them. Both habituated and non-habituated squirrels and raccoons can smell the scent from an attic that has had squirrel or raccoon inhabitants, so it’s important to be on the alert for any new entries and to repair any vulnerable areas (potential entries) on a structure.

The courteous staff of Tri-State Wildlife Management  works for you to provide a cost effective solution to your wildlife intrusion and/or damage issue. As a full service company, we initiate an Integrated Wildlife Management Program beginning with an inspection and customer education, followed by removal of intrusive wildlife and repair of wildlife damage. Raccoon Control & Removal

Raccoon Removal Covington, KY: Are raccoons ransacking your attic, soffits, and shingles? As the weather turns colder, raccoons are making their way into homes and structures. Raccoons can be one of the most destructive animals while trying to get into homes or once habituated to a home.  They are so curious and active that they tear into soffits and eves with a breeze, spread shingles like an industrial wood chipper, and pull ill-fitted caps off of chimneys. Tri-State Wildlife Management offers raccoon removal in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.  TSWM will eliminate the violators and the havoc that they may have left behind. If you suspect raccoons in the attic or hear noises in the chimney or fireplace, call Tri-State Wildlife Management.  We are experts at eliminating our customers’ raccoon problems with our raccoon removal, exclusion, and repair services. We can diagnose your problem, remove the raccoons, and provide the necessary repairs to cover holes and construction gaps that are allowing them entry into your home or business. We also offer full attic cleanups after raccoon removal!

The common raccoon Procyon lotor is probably best known for its mischievous-looking face mask which undoubtedly matches his behavior.  Raccoons are usually a grizzled grey in color with a tail marked by seven alternating black and brown rings. Body coloration can vary from albino, (white) to melanistic (black) or brown. An annual molt, or shedding, of the fur begins in the spring and lasts about three months.

Tri-State Wildlife Management is fully insured, and we stand behind all of our work.

Kenton County, KY Wildlife Control: On Tuesday of this week, the technicians at Tri-State Wildlife Management took advantage of the break from the torrential rain to go on calls, especially in Kenton County, KY. They had a few repairs and animal pick ups, and they also needed to check a few traps and indicators. It just so happened that the vast majority of their calls took place in Kenton County, KY.

First on the agenda was a job in Edgewood, KY to check raccoon and squirrel traps. Andrew then went to a home in Villa Hills, KY and pulled 3 brand new juvenile raccoons out of an attic. He then had a short drive over to Ft. Wright, KY to pick up a squirrel in a trap and make some preliminary repairs to the ridge vents of the home. Again, Andrew went on another short drive to Park Hills, KY to check an indicator. In this instance, the technician was not able to previously determine what type of animal was entering the home, so an indicator was used that will leave behind sign of the nuisance animal. Based on the fur and maybe other markings left on the indicator, Andrew will now be able to determine whether the animal getting into the attic was a raccoon or squirrel. Next up on the schedule, Andrew went to a Crescent Springs, KY home to remove squirrel traps and start a repair. The last Kenton County, KY job for Tri-State Wildlife Management was simply to check some raccoon traps at a residence in Ryland Heights, KY.

Dead Animal Removal Taylor Mill, KY

April 10th, 2014

Tri-State Wildlife Management – Offering Dead Animal Removal Services in Taylor Mill, KY (859) 635-0037

Spring is here, and we’ve finally had some warm days. Tuesday of this week was especially sunny and warm in the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area, including Taylor Mill, KY. On the other hand, yesterday and today have exhibited the rainy side of spring with torrential downpours and thunderstorms. Despite the less-than-stellar weather, yesterday was a full day of inspections, checking traps and indicators, and a dead animal removal call.

Dead Animal Removal Taylor Mill, KY Andrew and Andy (A & A), Tri-State Wildlife Management‘s technicians, went to Taylor Mill, KY for the dead animal removal call. Andy’s a fairly new technician and has never gone on a dead animal removal call, so Andrew took this opportunity to train him. The suspected dead animal was under an office trailer. First, A & A went into the office to see if they could somewhat locate the smell, but to no avail. Not being able to smell anything from inside meant they couldn’t pinpoint where under the office trailer they should start their search. Suited up in protectivee gear, A & A belly crawled under the trailer, keeping their eyes peeled for any sign of fur. There was a slight dead animal smell, but it wasn’t overwhelming…yet.

After belly crawling under the building for just a couple of minutes, Andy informed Andrew that he saw a raccoon tail. Andrew’s first question was, “Is it dead?” Although being hired for dead animal removal, you can never be too careful when dealing with wildlife. He wanted to make sure they didn’t stumble upon anything live while being in such a vulnerable situation – there are no fast get-aways when you have to belly crawl. You’re also not in the best stance to defend yourself.

Unsure of the status of the raccoon, and wanting to keep a safe distance until it was determined, A & A decided to throw a few pebbles at the lump of fur to see if it moved. It did not…they moved in.

Andy, anxious to pull his first dead animal gig, grabbed the raccoon tail, and as he did, the horrible, torturous smell of a long-been-dead-animal emitted from the raccoon. Gagging and sputtering through full face masks, A & A belly crawled back out from underneath the office trailer.

Unless just fur and bones are left, the longer an animal has been dead, the stinkier it is. Let’s just say this one was a doozy. Working in wildlife removal and control, A & A are used to their fair share of less-than-pleasant smells, but this raccoon takes the cake. Both technicians had to shower before going on their remaining calls, for their sakes, but especially for other customers’ sakes!

Wildlife Signs and Sounds

Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem? Don’t wait for the problem to get worse – call Tri-State Wildlife Management, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s wildlife removal professionals! (513) 853-0037 or (859) 635-0037

Wildlife Signs and Sounds – Do you have a raccoon, squirrel, or skunk problem?

Oftentimes when wild animals occupy a structures or property, they leave behind noticeable signs. The following are signs of raccoons, squirrels, and skunks. Some of the most noticeable signs raccoons leave behind include smudges from climbing on buildings and downspouts, as well as latrines which are very visually observable and strong in smell. Gray squirrels typically

do not use latrines; instead, their droppings and urine are scattered. Chewed rafters and electrical wires may be signs of squirrel damage, as squirrels have a need to gnaw and seem to like the taste of wire insulation. Many squirrel entry points into structures are gnawed and chewed holes. In addition, fur can get caught in splintered wood at entry points. Smears are oftentimes visible at entry points into buildings if the entry has been used for a significant amount of time, and occasionally muddy or sooty footprints can be found leading to entry points. Skunks are known for the strong odor emitted when they spray as a defense mechanism; however, skunk smell can be detected from a mile away so smelling the odor does not necessarily mean a skunk(s) is present. In addition, when another animal is sprayed by a skunk, the odor stays on them for a significant amount of time. An odor that increases rather than decreased in intensity may be a sign that a skunk has died nearby.

In addition to visual signs, wild animals emit a variety of voices and sounds, all serving different purposes. The widely popular song, “The Fox (What does the fox say?)” may have you wondering just what sounds a fox truly does make, in addition to other wild animals in the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky area. If you want to check out a comparison of the fox sounds in the song versus true fox sounds, click here to see a Youtube segment of Animalist News. Raccoons make various sounds including complaint and distress calls, as well as purring, chattering, cooing, and chirping. Squirrels make a variety of sounds including churrs, barks, and squeals. Churrs express anger, barks act as warnings, and squeals occur when a squirrel is distressed or in pain. Skunks emit sounds such as screeching, whining, chirping, whimpering, grumbling, grunting, and lip-smacking.
